Special Consonants in English

Special consonants are those which have no or very little resemblance in other languages.

[ʃ] is expresses by letter combinations "sh", "ss", as well as in letter combinations

sh - shelter ['ʃeltə] 
ss - issue ['ɪʃuː] 
sion - mission ['mɪʃ(ə)n] 
tion - mention ['menʃ(ə)n 
cia - special ['speʃ(ə)l] 

[tʃ]

It is a sibilant sound and is expressed by combinations "ch" and "tch", it can be present in combinations "ture", sometimes in "tion" and "tua".

ch - chop [ʧɔp]
tch - witch [wɪʧ]
ture - culture ['kʌlʧə]
tion - question ['kwesʧən] 
tua - virtually ['vɜːʧuəlɪ] 

[ʒ]

It is a voiced sound.  In writing it is transferred by letter "g", sometimes by "s", and in the letter combination "sure".

g - massage ['mæsɑːʒ] 
s - casual ['kæʒuəl] 
sure - measure ['meʒə] 

[dʒ]

This sound is very much alike the previous, but it has short “d” before [ʒ]. Both sounds are articulated as one sound together.
In writing it is expressed by letters "g" and "j", and letter combination "dg".

g - origin ['ɔrɪʤɪn] (происхождение) 
j - jealous ['ʤeləs] (ревнивый) 
dg - ridge [rɪʤ] (гребень горы) 

[θ]

This voiceless sound is one of the most difficult in English. The tip of the tongue is protruded and lies flat between the upper and lower teeth. Lips do not participate in the formation of this sound. In writing letters "th"are used.
 

th - thankful ['θæŋkf(ə)l]
th - everything ['evrɪθɪŋ] 
th - loath [ləuθ] 

[ð]

This is the second sounds of the most complicated. It is pronounced in the same way as [θ] but it is voiced sound. In writing letters "th"are used.

th - then [ðen] 
th - weather ['weðə] 
th - breathe [briːð]
